Wisdom Teeth Removal

What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars and they are the very last molars in the back corners of the mouth. They usually come in around the “years of wisdom” at 18-22 years of age, that’s how they get their name, with some variations of people getting them as early as 15-30 years or even older.

Why is Wisdom Teeth Removal needed?

About 35% of people out there don’t need to have their wisdom teeth removed because they’re either missing (one or more) or they can erupt and fit into their jaws perfectly causing no issues at all. However, most people need to have their wisdom teeth removed because there is not enough room for them to erupt fully. Here at Beacon Hill Dental Centre we usually take a panoramic radiograph to assess if you have impacted wisdom teeth that are trapped in an awkward position and not erupting naturally. When wisdom teeth are impacted they are difficult to keep clean and maintain and can cause issues like swelling, gum disease, shifting, cavities and damage to neighbouring teeth.

How can you tell if you need to have your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Most often, wisdom tooth pain and symptoms come and go as they try to erupt into the mouth. You might experience severe pain and inflammation that lasts for about a week before it goes away and comes back later on. Some of the most common signs to look for when you have impacted or problematic wisdom teeth include:

  • Swelling, tenderness and pain at the back of the mouth
  • Inflammation and infection of the gum tissue in the back of the mouth
  • Sharp pain to surrounding teeth
  • Shifting or pressure on neighbouring teeth
  • Recurrent headaches and earaches
  • Bad breath

Here at Beacon Hill Dental Centre in Burlington we recommend wisdom teeth removal before any of the above problems arise and through experience we know that the earlier the better the outcome and recovery from the procedure.
